I'm sure that most of you are familiar with Peter Jackson, thanks to his work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Great movies, really, but I must say, not my favorite work of his.

I, unfortunately, have only gotten to see four of his pre-lotr films. Probably his most famous (and my least favorite of the four) is The Frighteners. It's an enjoyable enough movie, with a pretty cute storyline, but it just doesn't do Peter much justice.

Heavenly Creatures is an amazing film of his. It's missing the gore of his two earlier films, but it's an amazing story, one that really gets you thinking. It's actually based on a true story, as well. It's about two friends who plot a murder against one of the girls' mothers. Actually, that's not even what most of the movie is about. It focuses mainly on the bizarre friendship they share, and all the trouble they seem to have to go through to keep it.

Another great film of his is Dead Alive (a.k.a. Brain Dead). Fucking hilarious film, though it's not for the faint at heart. Poor Lionel Cosgrove, a shy boy who's spent his entire life living with his pushy, insane overly-protective mother, finally meets the girl of his dreams. Nothing could get any better for him, it seemed.

But things took an unexpected turn for the worse when "Mum" turned into a violent, flesh-eating zombie. Lionel tries everything to keep the monster at bay, and hide the truth from his new love Paquita. But he finds this very difficult as more and more zombies fall under his care. How do you keep a zombie under your control, you ask? Why, with animal tranquilizers, of course!

The climax of this film if probably the goriest I've ever seen, showing crawling limb after crawling limb, beheaded zombies, plenty of people getting ripped in half, and even a crawling intestine determined to kill. As I said before, don't watch this movie if you're squeemish.

Oh yes, and Peter has a small role in this film. I won't give it away, but be sure to look for him!

Derek, played by Jackson, tries his best to shove the fallen bits of brain back into his head.

Bad Taste isn't nearly as gory as Dead Alive, but I'm pretty sure I like it better. (It's a tough call, really....) This was Peter's second movie, which is probably why he has two roles in it (budget issues). Bad Taste is about a bunch of aliens invading earth, with the intent of raising humans as "livestock". It's up to "the boys" to save the world.

I just think this movie is so hilarious - it has you laughing almost every minute. Oh, but don't worry. There are still gory scenes that give you the chance to feel naseous.

This movie is a bit harder to explain, plotwise, since the characters don't really all meet up until the movie is pretty far in. If I tried explaining it, it would probably make no sense whatsoever. So take my advice and just go see it.
